Safety And Security

Metro has many safety and security measures in place so that you may have a comfortable ride on a Metro bus. Our partnership with the Rock Island County Sherriff’s Department provides Metro with full time Sherriff’s Deputies and K-9 units who patrol all Metro vehicles and facilities. In addition, Metro Supervisors and transit operators provide additional security presence throughout the transit system.

All buses and facilities are equipped with a video surveillance camera system to monitor our buses and facilities.

There is a close link between Metro, police, fire, and ambulance services. We hold regular emergency exercises and all Metro employees are trained in evacuation and safety procedures.

If you see a suspicious package or behavior, please call 9-1-1 or notify Metro personnel. Please follow the instructions of the operator or Metro staff in the event of an emergency.

Do your part! Remember these tips when riding a Metro bus.

Waiting for the Bus:

  • Watch for slippery or uneven pavement and other hazards that could cause you to fall or twist an ankle. With the same thought in mind, try not to carry so many packages that you don’t leave one hand free to grasp railings
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Stay alert.
  • If you notice suspicious activity, call 911 or alert the Metro operator
  • Arrive in plenty of time to board safely
  • Dress accordingly for the weather

Boarding the Bus:

  • Never walk directly in front of or behind a stopped bus for your safety
  • Do not approach the bus until it has come to a complete stop
  • Wait for off–loading passengers to disembark before boarding
  • Have your fare pass or cash ready and in hand when boarding; drivers cannot make change
  • As the bus approaches, please have your bike ready to load from the curbside. See Bike and Ride for more information.

On the Bus:

  • Signal the driver for your stop 1 (one) block prior to your destination
  • If you have questions while you are on the bus, the drivers will gladly help. Use opportunities to ask your questions while the bus is not in motion.
  • If someone on the bus bothers you, change your seat and inform the driver

Departing the Bus:

  • Remain seated until the bus has come to a complete stop
  • Be aware of your surroundings when disembarking
  • Always obey traffic signals
  • Wait for the bus to pull away before crossing the street
  • Make sure to take all personal belongings with you (if you forget an item on the bus, please contact lost and found 309-788-3360)
  • Watch for slippery or uneven pavement and other hazards that could cause you to fall or twist an ankle. With the same thought in mind, try not to carry so many packages that you don’t leave one hand free to grasp railings.
